What should business IT support cost?
There is no useful one-size-fits-all number. The right question is what
your environment requires, what risk you are carrying, and what level
of responsibility your technology partner is taking on.
WHAT DRIVES COST
Start with the environment, not the quote.
Users & devices
User count, endpoints, servers, cloud systems, locations, remote
workers, and specialized applications all affect support requirements.
Security requirements
Identity controls, endpoint protection, monitoring, backups,
vulnerability management, regulatory needs, and incident readiness
change the scope materially.
Service responsibility
Fully managed IT, co-managed support, project work, strategic
consulting, and emergency assistance represent very different
operating models.
COMPARE CAREFULLY
Two proposals can look similar while covering very different things.
When comparing technology providers, look beyond the monthly number.
Ask what is actually included, which systems are monitored, how security
responsibilities are divided, what happens after hours, how projects are
handled, and what is specifically excluded.
A useful proposal should make the operating model understandable—not
force you to reverse-engineer it from a list of tools.
